Reward for what you already did

Retroactive airdrops

A retroactive airdrop rewards people for activity they had already completed before any token was announced. The project picks a cut-off date in the past, looks at who was using it, and distributes accordingly. Nobody knows the criteria in advance — that is the entire point, because a published rule set would simply be farmed.

Who it suits
People who use protocols they genuinely find useful and are content to be rewarded occasionally rather than reliably. It suits patience far more than effort.
What it costs
Gas only, plus whatever capital you were going to use anyway. There is no fee to qualify, but there is also no guarantee of anything at all.

How to take part

A blueprint rather than a guarantee. Following every step improves your chances; nothing makes a distribution certain.

Use protocols that have no token yet

A project that has already launched its token cannot run a retroactive drop for past users. Well-funded projects without a token are the only candidates.

Behave like a real user, not a farmer

Most modern criteria filter for depth: transactions spread across many months, several different features used, meaningful amounts. A hundred one-dollar transactions in one afternoon is the pattern teams specifically exclude.

Spread activity over time

Arbitrum's criteria explicitly counted activity across distinct months, with more months scoring higher. Consistency over a year beats intensity over a week.

Use more than one feature

Bridging, swapping, lending and governance all counted separately in several past drops. Interacting with several contracts scored higher than repeating one.

Keep one wallet clean

Sybil detection has become the main filter. Arbitrum disqualified wallets flagged by Hop Protocol's sybil bounty outright. One honest wallet beats twenty linked ones.

Check eligibility only on the official domain

Every large drop attracts fake claim sites within minutes. Confirm the URL through the project's own X account before connecting anything.

What this has paid historically

Figures below are from the distributions named, on the dates named. They describe what happened once and are not a forecast. Most campaigns in every category pay nothing at all.

Optimism (OP) — May 2022

200 million OP distributed to roughly 250,000 addresses. Average allocation was around 800 OP, worth approximately $1,600 at the time, with individual allocations ranging from 409 to 27,534 tokens.

Arbitrum (ARB) — March 2023

1.162 billion ARB to 625,143 eligible addresses. The median allocation was 1,250 ARB; the minimum was 625 and the maximum 10,250. ARB traded around $1.30–$1.50 in its first days.
